Campbell records first NFL win as Redskins down Panthers

Football Betting Lines

11/26/2006 - Landover, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Campbell threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Chris Cooley for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, as the Washington Redskins posted a 17-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers at FedEx Field.

Campbell notched his first NFL victory in his second career start, throwing for 118 yards and two scores with an interception on 11-of-23 passing. Ladell Betts ran for 104 yards on 24 carries for the Redskins (4-7), who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for only the second time in their last seven games.

Jake Delhomme completed 23-of-38 passes for just 168 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Carolina (6-5), which had a two-game winning streak stopped.

The Panthers fell one game behind New Orleans for first place in the NFC South, as the Saints beat Atlanta on Sunday.

Carolina took a 13-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Delhomme to Steve Smith, and Richard Marshall picked off a deep pass by Campbell on the first play after the ensuing kickoff.

But the Washington defense forced a three-and-out and the Redskins got the ball back at their own 20 with 5:51 remaining.

Campbell needed four plays to put his team back in front. After two Betts carries and an incomplete pass, Cooley caught a short pass, broke a tackle and raced 66 yards to the end zone for the go-ahead score.

The Panthers failed on two chances with the ball in the final minutes. They quickly moved into Washington territory with their first series after the score, but came up short on 4th-and-6 from the 33-yard line when Sean Taylor tackled Drew Carter two yards shy of a first down. After a punt, Delhomme was picked off by Taylor in the final minute to seal the contest.

After a lackluster first half that had Carolina ahead 6-3, neither team managed much offense in the third quarter until the Redskins caught a break when a Panthers punt went just 11 yards to give Washington a first down at the Carolina 36.

Campbell took advantage of the short field and directed a seven-play drive for the game's first touchdown. T.J. Duckett keyed the series with a 19-yard run and Campbell finished it with a four-yard touchdown pass to Antwaan Randle El to give Washington a 10-6 lead in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

The Panthers, who had just 16 yards and no first downs in the third period, answered with a 74-yard drive that ate up more than seven minutes for the go- ahead score.

Carolina had only one play of more than nine yards on the 15-play series and converted four third downs. The last came on an eight-yard touchdown reception by Smith, who made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone and the video review upheld the call to give the Panthers a 13-10 edge with 7:55 to play in the fourth quarter.

Smith managed only five catches for 34 yards. The Panthers played without running back DeShaun Foster, who sat with an elbow injury. Rookie DeAngelo Williams ran for 63 yards on 17 carries in his place.

Carolina struck first on a 42-yard field goal by John Kasay, as a 28-yard run by Williams ignited a nine-play drive that stalled at the Washington 24.

After a trio of three and outs to start the game, including one that followed an interception of Delhomme, the Redskins followed the field goal with their first sustained drive. However, Nick Novak's 37-yard field goal try hooked left in the first minute of the second quarter.

The defensive struggle continued as neither offense picked up a first down again until Washington mounted a drive from its own 45 and Duckett converted 3rd-and-1 with a two-yard run midway through the quarter. The Redskins moved close enough for a 42-yard field goal from Novak, tying the game with 4:35 to play in the first half.

Washington's next series ended in a punt and it appeared to be deflected, as the ball traveled just two yards to give Carolina possession at the Washington 44 with 13 seconds left before the intermission.

Two quick plays put Kasay in range and he drilled a 51-yard field goal for a 6-3 Carolina edge at the break.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl

NFL Super Bowl Betting

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.

Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.

The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East. MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
