Cards aim to further bury winless Astros in series finale

Baseball Betting Lines

04/15/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The only winless team left in baseball, it isn't surprising that the Houston Astros are last in the majors in runs scored. That's good news for St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse.

Lohse will look to get his season on track when St. Louis goes for a sweep of its three-game set with 0-8 Houston this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

The Astros are last in the majors with a mere 14 runs scored, while their .214 team batting average is the worst in the National League. They were able to plate a run in the first inning of Wednesday's contest, but got nothing else in a 2-1 setback.

Michael Bourn had two hits for the Astros and scored that unearned run on Pedro Feliz's sacrifice fly, but Houston wasted a a seven-inning effort by Brett Myers, who took the loss despite allowing only two runs -- one earned -- and striking out seven.

"I made some mistakes in the first inning," Myers said. "I have to go out there when the team scores a run and have a shutdown inning,"

St. Louis starter Brad Penny lasted seven innings, giving up only three hits without a walk and striking out four. Albert Pujols had an RBI single for the Cards in the first inning, and Ryan Ludwick later scored in the frame thanks to a Tommy Manzella error.

"It makes it easier [pitching ahead in the count]," Penny said of his outing. "As long as I can stay ahead and keep them guessing, then I should be successful."

While St. Louis has won four of its last five and six of its first eight to start the season, Houston is off to its worst start since beginning the 1983 season with nine straight setbacks.

The Cardinals have won eight of their last 11 versus the Astros, as well as 11 of the last 13 played at Busch Stadium between the teams. They also began their 2009 season series versus Houston with a three-game sweep at home from April 10-12.

Lohse will try to pitch St. Louis to its first series sweep over Houston since. The 31-year-old righty got a no-decision in his first start of this season, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over six innings versus the Brewers on Friday.

"I got in trouble when I walked guys," Lohse told St. Louis' Web site. "There were a lot of pitches that were just off [the plate] I guess. You can't walk yourself in trouble like that."

Lohse has enjoyed pitching against Houston in the past, going 2-1 with a 2.45 earned run average in three starts versus the club last year, as well as 6-5 with a 2.99 ERA lifetime.

Houston will go with Bud Norris, who will look to rebound after a rough outing last Friday versus Philadelphia. Norris was tagged for three runs on six hits and four walks in just 2 2/3 innings, taking the loss in an 8-0 setback.

"I was all over the place tonight," the right-hander said afterwards. "I have some adjustments to make, either mechanically or mentally."

Norris, 25, held the Cardinals without a run in two starts versus them during his rookie campaign last year. He pitched 13 scoreless innings in that span, giving up eight hits and six walks with eight strikeouts. That includes his first MLB start, a seven-inning effort on Aug. 2.

The Cardinals are hitting just .178 off him.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook

Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds.  The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.

Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.

Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
