Cards come up aces, edge Mets to advance to World Series

Baseball Betting Lines

10/20/2006 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Yadier Molina belted a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and the Cardinals escaped a bases-loaded jam to end the game for a return trip to the Fall Classic with a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets in a dramatic Game 7 of the National League Championship Series.

Jeff Suppan threw spectacular ball into the eighth inning and Adam Wainwright worked out of the jam in the ninth, getting Carlos Beltran looking at a called third strike on the outside corner to preserve the nail-biting win for St. Louis.

Ronnie Belliard drove in the other run for the Cardinals, who were swept by Boston in the 2004 World Series. Now they head to Detroit on Saturday for the opener of this year's title set with a chance to win the World Series for the first time since 1982 when they topped Milwaukee.

The Mets had a valiant effort from starting pitcher Oliver Perez and an incredible catch from Endy Chavez in left field to take a home run away from Scott Rolen in the sixth inning.

However, it was Rolen who reached base with a single to left with one out in the ninth. Molina, a third-year catcher, then crushed a first-pitch offering from Aaron Heilman (0-1) well beyond the wall in left field, giving Chavez no chance at another saving catch.

Wainwright gave up singles to Jose Valentin and Chavez to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Wainwright used a devastating breaking ball to get pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd looking at a called third strike. Jose Reyes lined out to Jim Edmonds in center field. Paul Lo Duca walked, but Wainwright, a rookie who took over the closing duties due to an injury to Jason Isringhausen, painted the corner on the third strike, setting off a wild celebration between the raindrops.

The Mets went without a hit for seven straight innings. David Wright singled in the lone New York run in the first inning, as the Mets failed to secure their first trip to the World Series since 2000 when they fell in five games to the Yankees.

Randy Flores (1-0) finished the eighth inning for the win, while Wainwright earned the save.
