Cards send Carpenter to hill in Pittsburgh
Baseball Betting Lines
05/07/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Carpenter tries to extend a career's worth of
dominance against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals
head to PNC Park to begin a three-game weekend series of National League
Central Division rivals.
The Cardinals, 8-8 in 16 road games this season, lead the Central entering the
weekend, owning a 3 1/2-game bulge over second-place Cincinnati and an
additional game over the Pirates, who have won eight of 12 games at home.
St. Louis has struggled in Pennsylvania thus far, however, losing three of
four games at Philadelphia this week, including Thursday's 7-2 decision in
which Phillies ace Roy Halladay improved to 6-1 in his initial NL season.
Albert Pujols and Jason LaRue each drove in a run in the loss, while Kyle
Lohse (0-2) was tagged for five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits with a
walk and three strikeouts over four innings of work for the Cardinals, who had
won seven of eight entering the series.
Carpenter, who reached the big leagues with Toronto in 1997, is 11-1 in 13
lifetime starts against the Pirates, tossing two complete games and a shutout
while compiling a stingy 2.27 earned run average and allowing just a .197
average to opposing batters.
He's won all four of his decisions against other foes thus far in 2010,
including a 6-0 defeat of Cincinnati on May 2 in which he tossed seven innings
of two-hit ball with eight strikeouts.
Carpenter has given up just 27 hits and 12 earned runs in 38 innings to begin
the season, holding foes to an even more miniscule .196 batting average.
Carpenter, who is 1-0 in three road starts with a 5.00 ERA, will be opposed by
lefty Zach Duke, who opened the season with two straight wins, but has since
gone 0-3 with a no-decision in four starts.
Duke was on the short end of a 5-1 road verdict against the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 1, giving up nine hits and four runs in six innings.
He's been tagged for 31 hits and 20 runs in 22 innings in his last four
starts, after allowing 11 hits and four runs across 12 innings in the opening
victories against the Dodgers and Arizona.
Duke is 4-5 in 13 lifetime starts against St. Louis.
He is 1-1 in three home starts this year with a 4.76 ERA.
On Thursday in Pittsburgh, Lastings Milledge drove in four runs, Garrett Jones
ended with three RBI and the Pirates scored five times in the opening inning,
on the way to an 11-1 rout of the Chicago Cubs to complete a three-game sweep.
Ryan Doumit knocked in two runs and Brian Burres (2-1) allowed just three hits
in seven shutout innings as Pittsburgh notched its first three-game sweep of
the Cubs since doing so at PNC Park Aug. 28-30, 2006.
The Cardinals won 10 of their 15 meetings with the Pirates last season,
winning six of the nine games contested in Pittsburgh.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.
With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.
Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.
Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
