Kobe sits, but Lakers finally win in Portland

Basketball Betting Lines

02/07/2010 - Portland, OR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ron Artest poured in 21 points and Lamar Odom contributed 10 points and tied a career-best with 22 rebounds, as the Los Angeles Lakers overcame the absence of Kobe Bryant to win in Portland for the first time in nearly five years with a 99-82 triumph over the short-handed Trail Blazers.

The Lakers came into the game having lost nine in a row at the Rose Garden, but used a 47-30 rebounding advantage to end that skid. It was their first win in Portland since Feb. 23, 2005.

Bryant sat due to a sprained left ankle. Bryant, who is averaging 28 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists this season, had played in 235 straight games.

Shannon Brown tallied 19 points and Derek Fisher scored 14 for LA, which also received 13 points and eight boards from Pau Gasol. The Lakers won for the sixth time in eight games.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 16 points for Portland, which lost for the fifth time in eight contests. Andre Miller added 14 points and Jerryd Bayless 13 in defeat.

Before the game, the Blazers announced guard Brandon Roy will be sidelined through the All-Star break due to a strained right hamstring. Roy saw limited action in a January 20 game at Philadelphia, but hasn't played since. He'll also miss contests against the Thunder and Suns.

Aldridge had 12 points in the first quarter, when the Blazers shot a blistering 12-of-19, but the host team only led 29-26 after 12 minutes.

The Lakers turned the tide in the second, using a 21-7 spurt to go in front. Artest hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 51-46 lead and he ended the half by making another long-distance shot for a 54-48 cushion.

Los Angeles pushed that lead to double-digits in the third, and a jam by Gasol at the conclusion of the period had the visitors up 73-64 moving to the fourth.

The Lakers quickly pulled away with Jordan Farmar drilling a three-ball for an 83-66 lead at the midway point of the last stanza.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
