Cavs hope to snap skid vs. Hornets
Basketball Betting Lines
02/23/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Losing three in a row has brought the Cleveland Cavaliers
back to reality after their impressive 13-game winning streak, and they'll try
to end this season-long skid tonight at home versus the New Orleans Hornets.
Cleveland still has the NBA's best record at 43-14, but hasn't been playing so
well recently and dropped a 101-95 decision to the Orlando Magic on Sunday in
central Florida. All-Star LeBron James did his best with 33 points, nine
rebounds and six assists, while veteran Shaquille O'Neal registered 20 points
for the Central Division-leading Cavs, who fell to 17-6 in the new year,
trailing only Utah (18-5) for the best mark in the league since January.
"We played hard, but their perimeter guys just hit some big shots," said
O'Neal, who is averaging 15.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 blocks
in 25.4 minutes over the past 16 games.
Antawn Jamison, who will play his first home game as a Cavalier tonight,
posted 19 points and eight boards in Sunday's loss. Jamison will get a taste
of what it's like to play at Quicken Loans Arena, where Cleveland sports an
NBA-best 24-4 record. After having the top home ledger last season at 39-2,
the Cavs are trying to become only the 14th team in NBA history and seventh in
the previous 35 years to hold the best record as the host in back-to-back
campaigns.
James, the NBA's leading scorer at 30.0 ppg, and the top-seeded Cavs hope to
avoid losing four straight games since early in the 2007-08 season. A 19-6
record against the Western Conference this season may just do the trick.
New Orleans will open a short road trip against Cleveland and Milwaukee
tonight, and is 11-17 away from the Big Easy this season. It enters Tuesday's
tilt on a two-game winning streak, having defeated Houston by a 102-94 score
the last time out on Sunday in the finale of a four-game homestand.
Rookie guard Darren Collison followed up his first career triple-double with a
26-point, nine-assist performance to lead the Hornets, who went 3-1 on the
residency and sit one game off the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
Collison is averaging 17.9 points, 8.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds in 18 games as a
starter, while David West put together another solid effort with 27 points and
nine rebounds. He has averaged 28.0 points and 9.0 boards in the last two
games.
"I think that is a very good team we played, a team that shoots the ball very
well, scored the ball easily, and I am pleased that we were able to come away
with the win," said Hornets head coach Jeff Bower.
Bower will face perhaps the best team in the league tonight. The Hornets and
Cavs split a pair of meetings a season ago, but New Orleans has won four of
the past six matchups. Cleveland, however, is 10-3 in the previous 13 contests
as the host in this series.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.
As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.
Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds
The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.
Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).
But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.
Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.
Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:
Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1
Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2
New York Giants - 9 - 2
Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).
Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.
So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.
And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.
They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.
Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.
But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.
Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.
Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.
Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.
Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?
Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.
In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.
Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.
Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.
The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.
The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
