Eastern powers collide as Cavs host Hawks
Basketball Betting Lines
04/02/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - After slaying one beast of the NBA this week, the Atlanta Hawks will try to make it two big wins in a row when they pay a visit to
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at Quicken Loans Arena.
The playoff-bound Hawks just beat the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers,
109-92, on Wednesday at Philips Arena behind 25 points from All-Star Joe
Johnson and Maurice Evans added 18 off the bench. Zaza Pachulia added 10
points and 10 rebounds, while Jamal Crawford netted 14 for Atlanta, which has
won nine straight at home and is a game ahead of Boston for the third seed in
the Eastern Conference.
"We are definitely starting to get more opportunities to play," Evans said of
the bench. "We need those types of games to step in because it is a long
season and the starters log a lot of minutes."
Winners of two straight overall and 12 of their last 17 games, the Hawks are
still in contention for a Southeast Division crown. They are 4 1/2 games
behind the Orlando Magic with eight to play.
Atlanta will try to put the brakes on a three-game road losing streak and owns
a 17-19 ledger away from home this season. That goal won't be an easy one
against the best home team in the Cavs.
Cleveland has won nine in a row and 31 of its last 33 bouts at Quicken Loans
Arena, and improved to 2-0 on a three-game homestand following Wednesday's
101-98 triumph over the upstart Milwaukee Bucks. MVP candidate LeBron James
finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and deposited the
go-ahead layup with 17.4 seconds remaining in the game.
Mo Williams added 21 points and Antawn Jamison registered 12 points and 12
rebounds for Central Division-champion Cleveland, which has a magic number of
two to clinch the No. 1 seed in the East and is 16-2 in its last 18 games.
"Milwaukee did a nice job against us tonight," Cavs coach Mike Brown said.
"They had a legitimate chance to win the game. Our guys had to fight, stay
focused and trust one another down the stretch in order to get the win, and
they did it."
The Cavs are 33-4 as the host this season and are trying to become only the
second team in NBA history to put together consecutive 65-win seasons. The
only team to accomplish the feat was the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96 (72) and
1996-97 (69).
In injury news for Cleveland, forward Anderson Varejao is questionable for
Friday's game against Atlanta with a sore left hamstring. Varejao has missed
back-to-back games and is averaging 8.7 points and 7.8 boards this season.
Cleveland has won the first two meetings with Atlanta this season and four
straight overall. It is 20-10 in the previous 30 matchups against the Hawks,
who are winless in their last five trips to the Forest City.
